Are you a new believer looking to get baptized? Are you new to the area and looking for a church home? Brockport First Baptist is a compassionate community where all are welcome into the journey of faith. Read on to learn more about baptism and membership at our church!

BAPTISM

As Baptists, baptism is a practice we take very seriously. For us, baptism is a public statement—typically made the beginning of one’s Christian journey—where a person commits before God and the church to live a life of discipleship, centered on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. This is symbolized by our immersion into the water, mirroring Christ’s journey into the grave, and our rising out of the water, echoing the resurrection.

Because of the public nature of baptism and the seriousness of this commitment, we baptize adult believers by immersion (i.e., “dunking”). If you have already been baptized, whether as an adult or as a child, we honor the Holy Spirit’s work in your initial baptism and therefore will not require you to be re-baptized to become a member of our church. However, if you have never been baptized by immersion and desire to be baptized, we are happy to baptize you!

If you’d like to be baptized, please contact us and we’ll make it happen.

MEMBERSHIP

Becoming a member of a church is a commitment, similar to a marriage. Churches are messy because they’re made up of people and people are messy. While ours is not a perfect church, we strive to be a safe and welcoming place for all people. Human beings were made for community—with all its joys, struggles, and complexity. If you’re looking to join a community that will journey with you in the faith, we hope you’ll consider Brockport First Baptist.

There are three ways to become a member of our church:

  1. Baptism - for new believers and those who have never been baptized by immersion and desire to do so.

  2. Statement of Faith - for those who have already been baptized but don’t currently belong to a church.

  3. Letter of Transfer - for those who are looking to transfer their membership from another church.

We also offer watch-care memberships to folks who are only in town for a season—by they college students or any other type of temporary resident. If you have another church home outside of Brockport, we will honor that and are happy to be your church-away-from-home while you’re here.

CHURCH COVENANT

All church members sign a copy of our covenant, which reads as follows:

Believing that God has revealed himself to us through his only Son, Jesus Christ, we accept him as our Savior, and the Holy Scripture as the rule of our lives.

We will practice baptism of repentance in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We will be led in a new life of obedience and humility that the will of God might be known to others through us.

We dedicate ourselves to the task of discipleship that life eternal might be proclaimed in all the world. We will assemble for worship, prayer and service, and regularly gather at the table of communion to remember and experience the presence of our Lord.

We will strive for the advancement of the Church of Jesus Christ, looking to God in prayer, that we may know forgiveness of sin and be empowered to do his will with the company of his people, the Church Universal.
